1) Know your tree species...
Abies nordmanniana or commonly referred to as Nordman are the best performing needle retentive trees widely available.
2) Reputable suppliers...
Ask if your trees are BCTGA British Christmas Tree Growers Association members or look for Original Nordmann labels as both bodies follow strict quality guidelines. There should be a label on the tree or the retailer will have this information.
3) Have a close look...
When picking your tree remove the netting lift the tree up and tap it on the ground so the branches open out and you will get a good look at the real shape of your tree.
4) Be a star...
The top of the tree is the focal point so make sure the top of the tree has a strong leader to hold your tree topper (tallest stem) and growers measure the height of all trees from the centre of the tallest stem to the bottom of the trunk. Make sure your 6ft tree isn't a 4ft tree with a 2ft stem.
5) Early worm...
Rich pickings will be found mid November and the sorry specimens will still be there after Christmas.
6) Keep cool...
As long as you keep your tree outside it will be perfectly fine in the netting.
7) 1st day of Christmas...
Bring it in preferably as close to Christmas as possible and where possible keep away from heating.
8) Nil by trunk...
Cut trees take up a minimal amount of water as they naturally seal the cut to prevent infection, however having water around the base of tree does increase humidity which is of benefit.
9) Lights first...
Once your tree is up get the lights on it first nobody wants to be re-arranging lights around the decorations
10) The squint test...
Enterprise Plants best tip, once your lights are on stand back and squint you will instantly see exactly where you have lighting holes and too many lights.
11) Big at the base...
Once you’re ready to decorate use your largest decorations at the base and reduce in size as you work toward the top of the tree.
